THE WILD LIFE: Forty craftspeople from the region will share their wares Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wildlife Arts Festival of the Science Museum of Western Virginia at Roanoke's Center in the Square.

Other exhibitors will include the Roanoke Valley Gem and Mineral Society, the Herb Society of Southwestern Virginia and Defenders of Wildlife.

In addition there will be live animal presentations, a bird-walk/photography workshop, puppet shows and Appalachian storytelling, among other things.

For information, call 342-5710.\ PEACEFUL FEELING: "Peace Child," a musical fantasy about young people's hopes for global survival and a peaceful future, will be performed by a joint Soviet-American cast Saturday night at 8 and Sunday at 3 and 8 p.m. at Virginia Western Community College's Business Science Auditorium.

Tickets are $7.

Scenes from the production will be featured at today's Brown Bag Arts lunchtime performance from 12:15 to 1 p.m. at Crestar Plaza in downtown Roanoke. Admission is free.\ SWEET MEMORIES: Showtimers of Roanoke will turn back the pages of its 40-year history this weekend with a gala performance of songs and scenes from favorite productions.

Many of the original actors will reprise their starring roles, and a reception will follow each show.

The birthday bash will be presented tonight and Saturday night at 8 in Olin Hall on the Roanoke College campus. A matinee will begin Saturday afternoon at 3.

Tickets are $9. For reservations call 375-2333.\ UNDER THE STARS: The North Carolina Symphony will perform a summer pops concert tonight at 7:30 at Felts Park in Galax, a place better known as the site of the annual Old-Time Fiddlers' Convention.

Sousa marches, Dixieland tunes and selections from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" will be featured. Associate conductor James Ogle will wield the baton.

The North Carolina Symphony presents more than 180 full-orchestra concerts per year in more than 100 communities.

In Galax, the tickets will be $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens. The gates will open at 6, providing an opportunity for a pre-concert picnic.\ SEASON'S OPENER: The 28th season of the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival opens tonight and continues Saturday night on the grounds of the 19th-century Orkney Springs Hotel in Orkney Springs, not far from Mount Jackson.

The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra will perform an American popular music program tonight. On Saturday night, David Hardy, cellist with the National Symphony Orchestra, will join the the orchestra for Haydn's Cello Concerto in D Major.

Saturday afternoon at 2, "Little Red Riding Hood," an opera for children, will be presented free to kids. Adults may attend for $3.

Today and Saturday, arts and crafts will be sold on the hotel's lawn. Ice cream socials will be held prior to each concert.
