ANNEXATION STUDIED BY RURAL RETREAT

The town of Rural Retreat is looking into the possibility of adding 2.1 square miles through a boundary adjustment, if Wythe County would agree.

A formal study will be needed before any actual negotiations can be held.

The area under consideration has 227 homes, 13 commercial enterprises and three industries, according to a preliminary study completed for the town by the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission. Its population is estimated at more than 600.

The study also estimates that, if the area is annexed, the town would have to pay $16,640 per year more in trash disposal costs, hire another town policeman and add about 84 street lights.
