OWNER OF PROPOSED LANDFILL SITE TOLD THAT RESOURCE GROUP WILL VISIT

The New River Resource Authority has notified the property owner of a proposed landfill site in Pulaski County that authority representatives will come onto his land July 30 to begin investigations needed for permit applications to the state Department of Waste Management.

The proposed landfill is owned by Richard Matson and is on a portion of property formerly known as Dan Bar Farm, near Dublin off Virginia 627.

The authority has been trying to get access to the land since May.

Plans call for the application process to be completed by November and a permit issued after a one-year review by the state. If that schedule is adhered to, the new sanitary landfill could be open by February 1993.

Charles Maus, the authority's executive director, said the permitting process has been delayed by several weeks as a result of being unable to go on the property. He said a chief concern was that engineers from Olver Inc. would be pulled off the project if delays continued.

In June, the authority authorized its attorney to take steps to gain access to the site after Maus said he was having difficulty renewing an earlier agreement to notify Matson when there was a need to come on the land.

When asked for permission in May, Matson said it was an inconvenient time, Maus said. Since then, Maus said there had been no response to requests to schedule another time.
