Carol Novotny, the 11 p.m. weathercaster on WDBJ (Channel 7), is leaving the station for a similar job with independent station KUSI (Channel 51) in San Diego. Her last day at Channel 7 will be July 27.
Novotny's departure is the second by a Roanoke-market weather anchor to be announced this week. Cindy Farmer, WSLS' 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. weathercaster, said earlier this week that she is leaving Channel 10 for a job in Greensboro.
Novotny will be the primary weathercaster for KUSI, which is launching an evening news progam in September.
"You hate to lose good talent, but she's really happy and I'm happy for her," said WDBJ news director Jim Shaver.
The San Diego market is the nation's 24th-largest, compared to Roanoke-Lynchburg, which is 70th.
Novotny, a James Madison University graduate, joined WDBJ in 1987 from Harrisonburg station WHSV.
Shaver said he has made no decision on who would replace Novotny on the 11 p.m. newscast, adding that he would offer the position to current staff members before looking outside the station.
