CANADA TO OBTAIN LAND CLAIMED BY MOHAWKS

Canada's federal government intends to acquire land to end a dispute between Mohawk Indians and local authorities over property the Indians consider sacred, a Quebec official announced Thursday.

Quebec's native affairs minister, John Ciaccia, said federal officials have approved the purchase - or expropriation if necessary - of a 55-acre tract of forest. The village of Oka, 18 miles west of Montreal, had planned to use the land to extend a golf course.
