CLEVELAND ST. FIRES MACKEY

Cleveland State fired basketball coach Kevin Mackey on Thursday, and he soon will begin treatment for drug and alcohol abuse at a Houston center run by NBA player John Lucas.

Mackey was arrested July 13 as he and a woman drove away from a reputed drug house. A urinalysis revealed Mackey was drunk and that he had used cocaine.

"I just said that I fired Kevin Mackey. But really, he fired himself," said John A. Flower, president of Cleveland State. "It has become clear over the past few days that Kevin Mackey has, by his own admission, habitually and repeatedly made a mockery of standards of moral and ethical behavior."
