RIPKEN TIES RECORD IN WIN

Cal Ripken tied a major-league record with his 88th consecutive errorless game at shortstop and drove in two runs with a first-inning double, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

Orioles starter John Mitchell (2-2) gave up seven hits in 8 innings and benefited from three double plays. Gregg Olson retired Scott Fletcher to earn his 21st save.

Ripken, who hasn't made an error since April 13, matched Kevin Elster's string of successive games at shortstop without a miscue. Elster set the mark with the Mets from July 1988 to May 1989.

Ripken has handled more than 400 chances without an error, a major-league record.

While Ripken has excelled in the field this year, he has struggled at the plate. But it was his bat that propelled the Orioles to their eighth victory in 11 games.

With the score 1-1, Ripken broke out of a 1-for-11 slump with an opposite-field double that scored Joe Orsulak and Randy Milligan, giving the Orioles the lead.
