STATE APPROVES ROAD PROJECTS FOR BLACKSBURG

The state Transportation Board, meeting in Richmond on Thursday, approved recommended funding for Blacksburg's top four road projects over the next six years.

The board added the Hubbard/Southgate east-west connector to Blacksburg's list of projects, and approved tentative funding of $800,000 between 1993 and 1996 - the last year of the six-year plan.

The board reviews the six-year plan annually and may make changes.

Also, the board agreed to study the design of extending Patrick Henry Drive from Harding Avenue to Clay Street rather than to South Main Street at Airport Drive.

The latter proposal sparked immediate public opposition because it would have wiped out several historic and other homes. Town Council, in a resolution passed in June, said that option was unacceptable, and asked the highway department to consider the Clay Street connection.

"We've got planning people looking at the viability of designing that . . . and preliminary indications are that the answer would be yes," said resident engineer Dan Brugh.

The Patrick Henry Drive project also includes extending the existing section from North Main Street to Toms Creek Road at University City Boulevard.

A total of $3.75 million has been approved, starting with $35,000 next year for engineering, and $1.5 million in fiscal year 1995-96.

Funding schedules for two ongoing projects were unchanged.

The board will earmark $3.18 million to finish paying for widening South Main Street. Construction on the road is expected to be done by the end of the year.

Also, the project to widen and straighten Glade Road will receive $2.05 million through fiscal year 1994.
