DILLON PROPOSED FOR COLLEGE BOARD

Councilman David Bowers will recommend that LaVerne Dillon, a former Roanoke School Board member, be appointed as one of the city's representatives on the Virginia Western Community College local board.

Mayor Noel Taylor agreed recently to allow Bowers to make a suggestion on filling a vacancy on the board.

Bowers said he will recommend Dillon because of her educational background and involvement in civic affairs. She is a professor at Ferrum College.

"LaVerne has had extensive experience in education and in public service," Bowers said, adding that Dillon is willing to accept the appointment.

Dillon, a Democrat who lost a close bid for a City Council seat in 1984, was on the School Board from 1985 to 1988. She was replaced on a 4-3 vote.

At that time, Bowers and two other councilmen, Howard Musser and James Harvey, attacked other council members for replacing Dillon. They charged that the council majority had bowed to pressure from special-interest groups and supporters of Superintendent Frank Tota.

Dillon disagreed with some of Tota's recommendations during her term on the board.
