REBELS OFFER TRUCE, HELP WITH RESCUE

Rebel soldiers who led a coup attempt against President Corazon Aquino in December offered a truce today to help relief efforts following this week's killer earthquake.

"We call on the present leadership to set aside all political differences in order to squarely face this catastrophe," the underground Revolutionary Alliance of the Masses-Soldiers of the Filipino People said in a statement.

The rebel group said its members were prepared to help in the relief effort but asked that the government agree to a "temporary and finite" halt to the search and capture of rebel members.

It said the rebels have declared a unilateral stop to all anti-government activities "during this time of national tragedy."
