On July 16, the Board of Supervisors voted to hold a public hearing on a proposed 2 percent tax on the gross receipts of condominiums, apartments and town houses rented for fewer than 30 days.
Commissioner of Revenue Ben Pinckard said he could not estimate how much revenue the tax would generate because his office does not know the number of condos at Smith Mountain Lake.
The General Assembly passed legislation earlier this year giving Franklin County the authority to levy a transient occupancy tax on condos.
A public hearing on the tax is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 22.
