ADDITION PLANNED FOR RETIREMENT HOME

Carriage Hill Retirement Center in Bedford is adding 32 private and semi-private rooms to its current 128 beds. The home, which opened in October 1987, is owned by five Bedford-area residents.

Owner Betty Schuette said the addition will include both ambulatory and non-ambulatory rooms and is expected to be completed by mid-August. The expansion also will include a sun room and a lobby with an atrium-styled ceiling.

Schuette recently was promoted from assistant administrator to administrator. Other owners are Don Rowe, Oscar Padgett, Tommy Reynolds and Al Persinger.

Dan Perkins, nurse practitioner who joined the center in April, is the center's new director of nursing. Perkins received his certification as nurse practitioner from the University of Virginia.

Rates for semi-private rooms at the home are $35 to $50 per day. Private rooms cost $60 and up depending upon the level of care the occupant needs.

Schuette said total care is offered, but the home also has residents who drive and are active in the community.
