SALVADORAN GUERRILLAS START TALKS WITH THREAT

El Salvador opened a new round of talks with leftist rebels Friday under a guerrilla threat to start a new offensive unless significant progress is made. Six rebels were reported killed in new fighting.

The armed forces in San Salvador said Friday six rebels died and seven were wounded Thursday in heavy fighting with soldiers near Jucuapa, 68 miles east of the capital, and that one rebel was wounded near Lolotique, 75 miles east of San Salvador. It said the government's counterinsurgency Atonal infantry battalion was involved but gave no details.

Military patrols seized about 20 rebel antipersonnel mines in a raid at Tecoluca, 45 miles southeast of San Salador, and guerrillas dynamited five power-line towers, briefly blacking out eastern regions, the news release said.
