NEW D.C. LAW REQUIRES PARENTAL LEAVE POLICIES

Mayor Marion Barry on Friday signed a law requiring larger businesses to provide up to four months of unpaid leave for workers seeking time off to care for ill family members, including gay partners.

"Too many employees have had to choose between caring for their families and keeping their jobs," Barry said.

The legislation, which sponsors said was the broadest of its kind in the country, would apply to workers who want leave to care for a "family member," including newborns, ill relatives or partners in "committed relationships." Federal workers are not covered.
