SANDERS ACCUSED OF MURDER ATTEMPT

Warrants were issued Friday charging Washington Redskins wide receiver Ricky Sanders with attempted murder and aggravated assault after an incident outside a topless bar.

Sanders, 27, is accused of running over the valet parking attendant with his vehicle on May 1, said Houston Police Department spokesman Richard Retz.

Arrest warrants were issued charging Sanders with aggravated assault-serious bodily injury and attempted murder, Retz said. Bond was set at $5,000.

Houston attorney Cindy Henley said Sanders was in Washington on Friday and planned to return to Houston during the weekend to post bond. He expects to report to the Redskins' training camp Sunday as planned, she added.

Sanders could not be reached for comment at his Centreville, Va., home.

She said Sanders had a disagreement with a parking attendant, but she said the football player thought the attendant struck his car while he was leaving the parking lot.

"He [Sanders] didn't have any intent to commit any assault of attempted murder," Henley said. "There was an incident that occurred."

The alleged attack occurred outside the Men's Club, an upscale topless bar that opened in west Houston less than a year ago.

"When he left the club, he got in an altercation with a valet parking attendant over his hub caps," Retz said.

Sanders claimed his hub caps were stolen while he was at the club, while management said they were missing when he arrived, Retz said.

The attendant apparently was knocked to the ground by the left view mirror. Retz said he didn't know the extent of the attendant's injuries.

Henley said there was a disagreement over the hub caps, and Sanders "peeled out of the parking lot."

"They thought he hit their car . . . not that [Sanders] hit the man," Henley said.

"Our position is that this happened to him because he is a Washington Redskin," she said of the charges.

Sanders is a native of Temple, Texas, and played football for Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. He played for the Houston Gamblers of the now-defunct USFL in 1984-85 before joining the Redskins in 1986. B4 B1 SANDERS Sanders
