U.S. SENATE PANEL APPROVES FUNDING FOR FLOOD PROJECTS

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $2.3 million for the Roanoke River flood-reduction project in the next fiscal year to allow it to remain on schedule.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., said Friday he expects action by the full Senate before the end of the month. The House of Representatives voted earlier to approve a $2.3 million appropriation.

The project consists of channel widening, bank stabilization and flood walls along the 10 miles of the Roanoke River that flow through the city.

The installation of an early flood-warning system, the first phase in the project, is expected to begin before the end of the year.

The channel widening, which is expected to begin by early 1992, is scheduled to be completed by 1995.

Warner said the Senate Appropriations Committee also has approved $1.7 million for preconstruction engineering and design of flood control measures along the Maury River in Buena Vista.

President Bush had requested $600,000 for the Buena Vista project in the next year, but Warner requested $1.7 million because the Army Corps of Engineers indicated earlier that the project could use these additional funds.
