U.S. SENATE PANEL APPROVES FUNDING FOR FLOOD PROJECTS

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $2.3 million for the Roanoke River flood-reduction project in the next fiscal year to allow it to remain on schedule.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., said Friday he expects action by the full Senate before the end of the month. The House of Representatives voted earlier to approve a $2.3 million appropriation.

The project consists of channel widening, bank stabilization and flood walls along the 10 miles of the Roanoke River that flow through the city.

The installation of an early flood-warning system, the first phase in the project, is expected to begin before the end of the year.
