BUCS SEEK AID AS LOSING CONTINUES

Pittsburgh Pirates farm director Chuck LaMar came to Salem this week to check on the Buccaneers. What he's seen at Municipal Field hasn't been pretty.

"We're going to get some help in here soon," said Stan Cliburn, the beleaguered Salem manager.

"When, I don't know. It's definitely going to be tomorrow, the next day or whatever. Help is on the way."

Until then, the scorekeeper needs to keep his pencil(s) sharpened.

Twenty-four hours after taking a 10-0 beating from Prince William, the Bucs came a little closer Friday night. This time, they lost by only nine - 14-5.

The Bucs (8-17) gave a strong demonstration of why they have the worst record in the Class A Carolina League baseball.

For example, shortstop Rob Bailey allowed a slow, eight-hopper to go between his legs that could have ended the first inning. Two batters later, Prince William's J.T. Snow swatted a grand slam. Then, in the ninth, first baseman Ben Shelton dropped a waist-high throw. Five batters later, Sherman Obando ripped another grand slam. Result: eight runs, all unearned.

"Routine plays, we don't make 'em," Cliburn said with a moan.

Oh, there was some good news. The Bucs' first run in the third ended a 33-plus-inning scoreless streak against Cannons pitching.

\ BUCSHOTS: Snow, son of former Los Angeles Rams receiver Jack Snow, finished with a pro-high five RBI, prompting him to say of compact Municipal Field, "God, I'd love to play here all year." Obando also had two doubles. . . . The victory moved Prince William (11-13) into a virtual first-place tie with Lynchburg (12-14) in the Northern Division. . . . The Cannons go for the three-game sweep tonight, sending left-hander Frank Seminara (11-4, 1.38) against Salem's Paul Miller (6-4, 2.79). . . . Salem reliever Chip Duncan was taken out after four innings Friday because of a pulled groin muscle. His status is day-by-day. PRINCE WM.
