HERBERT NELSON DIES; ACTOR WHO HELPED START BARTER THEATRE

Herbert Nelson, a veteran actor who helped launch the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Va., the nation's first state-subsidized theater, has died at age 76.

Nelson, whose credits include "The Guiding Light" soap opera and the television series "Maude," died of a stroke Thursday at the Actors Fund of America Nursing Home here.

A native of Stillwater, Minn., his career began in the 1930s with tent repertory and stock theater in the Midwest. He did more than 30 live radio shows in Chicago, including "Perry Mason," before moving to New York in 1940 when "The Guiding Light" radio show switched to television.

During the late 1960s and 1970s, he had parts in many television shows, including "The Bold Ones," "The Waltons," "Little House on the Prairie" and "Maude."
