KEYS NIP SALEM ON BALK

After being hammered by Prince William three consecutive nights, the Salem Buccaneers found a more subtle way to lose Sunday night at Municipal Field.

With the score 6-6, the bases full of Frederick Keys and two outs in the top of the 10th inning, Bucs reliever Roger Williams balked in the go-ahead run and the Keys held on for a 7-6 Carolina League baseball victory.

The Bucs (8-19) are 0-4 on their current homestand and have lost six consecutive games.

Salem manager Stan Cliburn said he was unhappy about third-base umpire Doug Irvin's game-deciding call.

"I thought it was very poor judgment," Cliburn said. "I told Williams five times that if he was going to pitch from the stretch, make sure that he came to a complete stop [before pitching].

"[Irvin] was just looking for a call to make. He was over-umpiring. I've thought he has done that in the past, but this time it cost us the ballgame."

The Bucs were in control early. Right-fielder Chris Estep hit a solo homer in the second inning, and catcher Mandy Romero added a three-run homer in the third to put Salem up 5-1. Estep's home run, his 14th, tied him for the league lead.

Bucs starter Steve Buckholz struggled in the fifth, allowing four runs, including three on consecutive doubles to Mike Lehman, Mike Richardson and Ed Horowitz.

Salem regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on designated hitter Ken Trusky's RBI single, but the Keys' Richardson doubled in a run to tie it in the ninth.

The loss dimmed a brilliant effort by Paul Wagner, who gave up just one hit in three innings of relief in his first Carolina League appearance. He was called up from Augusta on Saturday.

Mike Zimmerman took the loss.

\ BUCSHOT: Pete Rose Jr., in Cincinnati since his father's sentencing on tax-evasion charges Thursday, rejoins the Keys tonight.
