"There were a few clouds, no thunder. . . . It was one of those freak things," said Kirk Liebold of the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service.
A 19-year-old Navy enlisted man struck by the lightning remained in critical condition early today at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
The injured man, Larry E. Turner, of Macon, Ga., is stationed at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, said Lt. Bob Rivera, spokesman for the Navy facility.
Two other people, whose names were not made public, also received minor injuries when the lightning struck Saturday. The three were sitting under a beach umbrella.
Joe Wilson, the city's deputy director for emergency medical services, said the incident occurred about 2 p.m. when a thunderstorm "came up pretty suddenly."
Vince Chamberlain, a maintenance man at a motel, said, "There was no flash before, no warning. I've lived here for 16 years, and I've never seen anything like it."
Turner was in cardiac arrest and receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation from lifeguards when an ambulance arrived, Wilson said. The man was revived in the ambulance, went into cardiac arrest again and revived a second time at the hospital, Wilson said.
The two others were taken to the hospital where they were treated and released. One suffered superficial burns and the other apparently had no serious injury.
