INTERIM SUPERVISOR NAMED FOR FOREST

Don Blackburn has been named interim supervisor of the Jefferson National Forest, succeeding Charles "Chip" Cartwright, who has moved to Forest Service headquarters in Washington.

Blackburn, 58, has worked in the Jefferson supervisor's office in Roanoke for 12 years. He is the forest's staff officer for the division of fire, lands, minerals, soils and watersheds.

Blackburn, a native of Oklahoma and graduate of Oklahoma State University, will assume his supervisory duties on July 29.

Cartwright, a graduate of Virginia Tech, has been named assistant director of the U.S. Forest Service's New Perspectives program, which will emphasize forest uses other than timber production. Cartwright has been the Jefferson's chief for two years.

A permanent replacement for Cartwright in Roanoke should be found within three to five months. In the meantime, Blackburn said his immediate goal is to continue the programs Cartwright has begun.
