UMW WINS UNION VOTE AT HOSPITAL

The United Mine Workers won a lopsided 75-8 victory in a union-organizing election last week at the Dickenson County Medical Center in Clintwood.

The victory was the second for the UMW at a hospital. Mount Aloysius Hospital in New Lexington, Ohio, signed a union contract June 1.

The union said the 90 percent approval by the Dickenson hospital's registered nurses, lab technicians, ward clerks and laundry, dietary, maintenance and clerical staff was the fourth union-organizing victory in the past four months.

The UMW has a campaign under way to organize workers not directly involved in coal mining.
