WYTHE TO BEGIN TESTS AT POSSIBLE LANDFILL SITE

Wythe County has obtained a $7,000 six-month option to test a 1,549-acre Max Meadows site for potential landfill use.

A $750,000 selling price for the land has been set, if it proves suitable for a landfill. The county would keep timber rights and be able to extend its option for another six months for $28,000 if necessary.

The land is owned by B.C. Umberger of Wytheville and Larry H. Sykes and W.J. Dorton Jr., both of Russell County. The proposed landfill would serve Wythe County, the towns of Wytheville and Rural Retreat, and Bland County. - Southwest bureau
