NORFOLK SOUTHERN PLANS STEAM TRAIN EXCURSION

A steam train excursion through the mountains of Southwest Virginia is being planned by Norfolk Southern Corp. for people attending the Virginia Coal Council's 12th annual International Coal Conference and Exposition at the Airport Marriott Hotel in Roanoke Sept. 18-20.

Norfolk Southern will use its restored No. 1218 steam locomotive, which was built in 1943 and retired in 1959. Union Carbide of Charleston, W.Va., bought and used it to generate steam for peak demands and emergencies.
