CARTOON INCLUDED BIASED STEREOTYPING

WE ARE DISMAYED by the Oliphant cartoon that appeared in the Roanoke Times & World-News June 20. It depicted Secretary of State Baker in a Rip Van Winkle-like beard and pose, waiting late into the night for a phone call from Israel.

It is not the cartoon's main message that we deplore, but the comments of Oliphant and his penguin pal: "You can bet they'll call collect! . . . and they'll be asking for money."

We view these comments as classic anti-Semitic stereotyping. If Oliphant does not understand the bigoted nature of the comments, he should be made aware of it. If he does understand, he is cynically engaging in the spread of anti-Jewish animus.

Either way, the anti-Semitism manifested in this cartoon is beyond the pale of legitimate political commentary and must be condemned. IRA GISSEN Regional Director Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith NORFOLK
