TOP HEALTH AIDE FIRED IN N.Y. PAP SCANDAL

City officials who allowed about 3,000 Pap tests to languish for a year betrayed the public trust, Health Commissioner Woodrow Myers said before firing a top aide in the scandal.

After the delay, 11 tests revealed cancerous cells, 93 showed precancer conditions and 600 contained other abnormalities.

No women have died as a result of the mishandling, but some could be at risk, Myers said.

Pap smears test women for cervical and uterine cancer.
