BUCS LOSE AGAIN; NEW BLOOD COMING

As he watched his team slip further into the abyss of a dismal baseball season, Salem Buccaneers manager Stan Cliburn hoped the parent club, the Pittsburgh Pirates, would recognize his plight and send help.

In recent days, Pittsburgh farm director Chuck LaMar has been observing the struggling Bucs. Help appears to be on the way; whether it has come in time is another matter.

With a Carolina League-worst 8-20 record, the Bucs have three flat tires, and the fourth one has a nail in it. It is no certainty that an influx of five new players scheduled to be in uniform tonight will be enough.

Monday night at Municipal Field, Salem dropped its seventh consecutive game, 7-2 in 11 innings to the Frederick Keys.

Starter Tim Wakefield pitched 10 strong innings for the Bucs, but still came out a loser as the Bucs lost in extra innings for the second night in a row.

Frederick's Tim Holland went 4-for-5 with four RBI. His leadoff homer in the fifth inning made it 2-2. In the 11th, Holland hit a three-run triple off Salem reliever Mike Pomeranz that put the game out of reach.

"That's the breaks of the game," said Wakefield (5-11), who left in the 11th with one out and runners on second and third. "I did what I had to do."

Cliburn is banking that things will get better with the new players coming in.

Pitcher Keith Richardson and outfielder Domingo Merejo, who played most of the season in Salem before being promoted in June, are coming down from Class AA Harrisburg (Pa.), while shortstop Austin Manahan, infielder Willie Greene and catcher Felix Antiqua are coming up from Augusta (Ga.) of the Class A South Atlantic League. Right-handed pitcher Antonio Felix is scheduled to return to Salem from the Mexico City Reds.

"It'll be a different look tomorrow, a lot of new faces," Cliburn said. "Hopefully, they'll help turn things around."

\ BUCSHOTS: Salem pitchers Bobby Underwood (1-4, 6.80 ERA) and Stan Fansler (0-5, 4.26) have joined pitchers Butch Schlopy and Brent Honeywell on the disabled list. Reliever Chip Duncan is day-to-day with a groin pull. Richardson is scheduled to start in place of Tim McDowell tonight.
