GIRL BELIEVED HIT BY STRAY GUNFIRE

A 16-year-old Roanoke girl was injured late Monday night by what authorities said may have been stray gunfire in the Lincoln Terrace housing project.

Belinda Lewis of the 1000 block of Rockland Avenue Northwest told police that she and a friend were sitting at Downing and Dupree streets when they heard gunfire about midnight.

Seconds later, she noticed that her left thigh was bleeding and her pants were torn, the girl told police a short time later at Community Hospital.

Hospital officials said that a small cut on the side of Lewis' leg could have resulted from a bullet nicking her leg or a stone fragment from a ricochet.

Lewis was treated and released from the hospital.

About the same time of the incident, police had responded to a report of shots fired in the general area. An investigation could not determine who fired the shots or where they had come from, police said.
