ATKINSON, WALTER E.\
Walter E. Atkinson, age 65, of 4606 Mitchell Rd., died Tuesday, July 24, 1990,
at the Holston Valley Hospital & Medical Center. A native of Roanoke, Va., he
was a 1941 graduate of Jefferson Senior High School, a 1947 graduate of
Roanoke College with a B.S. Degree in Mathematics, and a 1950 graduate of
Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University with a M.S. Degree in
Chemistry. Mr. Atkinson came to Kingsport in 1949 and had been employed by the
Tennessee Eastman Company for 36 years, retiring in 1986. He was a veteran of
World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. An Eagle Scout, he had served as Scout
Master for several years and was a member of the First Broad Street United
Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Kendall S. and Jane Armentrout
Atkinson. Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Fitzhugh Atkinson; two sons,
David W. Atkinson and Steven F. Atkinson, both of Kingsport, Tenn.; two
daughters, Mrs. William L. (Susan) Platt, Decauter, Ga.; Ms. Ellen J.
Atkinson, Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Dr. Lee Atkinson, Roanoke; five
grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the First
Broad Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Toombs H. Kay officiating. A
graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorials
may be made to the First Broad Street United Methodist Church of Kingsport.
The family will be receiving friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the
Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home.
