To our readers:

Have you ever wanted to know how your stocks are trading in the middle of the day - especially in periods of volatile trading? Or needed information about stocks that the newspaper doesn't carry in its daily listings? Or wanted details on the top business stories of the hour?

Starting today, the Roanoke Times & World-News and The Associated Press are introducing a new financial information service, AP900 Audiotex.

It is a 900-number, pay-per-call telephone service that offers 1 1/2-minute business news reports that are updated every hour on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. A 2 1/2-minute wrap-up on the day's market activity runs at 5:20 p.m. It also provides stock market quotations that are updated 18 times a day on more than 9,000 publicly traded companies. The updates are made approximately every 20 minutes between 10 a.m. and 5:18 p.m.

With a phone with tone dialing, you can access any stock price as long as you have its ticker symbol. The number to call is 900-990-9900. You'll be asked to key in this newspaper's identification code, which is 145. You will then hear a series of instructions that will lead you through steps to get the information you want. The cost is 95 cents per minute and the charges will appear on your telephone bill.

The service also allows callers to determine the total value of their stock portfolios and of each issue at the most recent update.
