Authorities said Steve Dalton was charged after the truck rounded a curve, turned completely over and landed on its wheels in a front yard. Dalton apparently lost control of the truck after the several hundred gallons of water it was carrying shifted, said Montgomery County sheriff's Sgt. J.T. Whitt.
Firefighters had been dispatched to a grass fire near Interstate 81 just before the 9:20 p.m. accident.
One firefighter was sent to the Montgomery Regional Hospital as a result of the accident, Whitt said. A hospital spokesman said early today the firefighter had been treated and released.
Authorities estimated the damage to the truck at about $50,000. Its cab was bent in, the front end was damaged and part of its front axle broken.
"It messed up the red light on top, as you might imagine," Whitt said.
Firefighting equipment was strewn over the yard, on Virginia 603 between U.S. 460 and I-81.
"It was kind of neatly stacked," Whitt said.
Following the accident, firefighters started up the damaged truck and drove it out of the yard to a waiting wrecker.
