REBEL FORCE IN PERU BLAMED IN 40 DEATHS

Shining Path rebels killed at least 40 poorly armed peasant militiamen and wounded about 10 in a surprise attack on a small jungle village, authorities say.

The Maoist-inspired rebels were armed with assault rifles and machine guns, while the peasant militiamen were armed with carbines, machetes, arrows and spears, a spokesman for the government of Junin province said by telephone from the provincial capital of Huancaya.

The government says at least 19,000 people have been killed in political violence since the Shining Path took up arms 10 years ago.
