BRIEFLY

A U.S. Navy attack bomber crashed in the South China Sea on a routine night mission, a spokesman of the Navy's 7th Fleet in Manila said today. The pilot and navigator were reported missing. Lt. Lee Saunders said the Grumman A-6e Intruder left the aircraft carrier USS Independence to conduct night flying operations.

The Rev. Allan Boesak, a prominent anti-apartheid campaigner in South Africa, said today that he is resigning his church posts to seek a political career after a scandal over an extramarital affair. He reaffirmed a decision to step down as a Protestant minister despite pleas from other religious leaders and friends not to leave the church.
