EX-LAWMAKER'S HARASSMENT CHARGES DELAYED

Warrant charges against a former state lawmaker accused of harassing striking United Mine Workers members have been postponed until September, said Buchanan County General District Court officials.

The warrant charges that Don McGlothlin, a former House of Delegates member, cursed and used abusive language during a confrontation with striking UMW members July 13.

The court likely will wait until Sept. 10 to rule on the merits of the warrant. The hearing had been set for today.

The charges are a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable by a maximum $500 fine.

Several United Mine Workers members who were demonstrating at the Buchanan Courthouse claim McGlothlin swore at them. They also claim the former lawmaker tried to hit one union member with his car.

McGlothlin lost last November's election to union leader Jackie Stump.

Court officials say judges and prosecutors from other areas are normally brought in for strike-related hearings.

McGlothlin is the father of the Russell County judge who fined the UMW millions of dollars during the Pittston Coal Group strike.

Although most Pittston Group miners returned to work in February, many contract operations employees remain on strike. - Associated Press
