DIRECTOR HIRED FOR MT. ROGERS DELEVOPMENT

The Mount Rogers Development Partnership has hired a former Washington County Chamber of Commerce executive as its executive director.

Jerry Brown also has held chamber positions in Raleigh, N.C.; Charleston, S.C.; and Charlottesville-Albemarle County.

The partnership is an agency established to promote its region - the counties of Bland, Carroll, Grayson, Smyth, Washington and Wythe and the cities of Bristol and Galax - as a site for new or expanding industries.

It was organized through an effort by Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, starting about two years ago when Boucher noted that the rest of the 9th Congressional District already had such organizations in place.

The partnership is starting with less funding than it originally had budgeted, because the Wythe County Board of Supervisors agreed to pay only half of the $1 per capita funding sought from the participating localities.

Partnership officials decided that to accept Wythe as a member on that basis, it would have to offer to cut the contributions by the other members in half as well.
