BARTER THEATRE PLANS FESTIVAL PERFORMANCES

Barter Theatre will offer a variety of plays and performances during this year's Virginia Highlands Festival, celebrating arts and crafts in Abingdon.

The play at the main theater will be the musical, "Pump Boys and Dinettes," continuing through Aug. 18. Playing at the Barter Playhouse now through Aug. 25 is "Good Evening," a showcase of satire in cabaret set pieces blending British comedy and music.

Other performances also are planned, including John Chappell's fourth festival appearance as Benjamin Franklin. He will be on the Barter Theatre stage Monday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $7.50.

The show was commissioned for the 1987 Constitutional Bicentennial Celebration in Philadelphia.

On Aug. 6, the comedy team of Monteith and Rand will perform at Barter at 8 p.m. Their 90-minute show is divided between prepared sketches and improvisational situations developed from audience suggestions. Admission is $7.50 or a Festival Patron ticket.

Lunchtime Theatre will feature the Barter Fellows Acting Ensemble from Friday to Aug. 18 in "Spoon River Anthology, Part I," at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. There is no admission charge.

"Rapunzel" and "Rumpelstiltskin" will be performed at the Playhouse through Aug. 3, Tuesday through Friday at 10 a.m. Again, there is no charge.
