AIDS TESTING FOR ALL URGED IN CITY HOSPITALS

Federal health officials are recommending that hospitals in areas with large numbers of AIDS cases should routinely offer testing for the disease to all their other patients.

No widescale testing for AIDS is done in the public or private hospitals of New York City, which has the most AIDS cases in the nation.

The recommendation stemmed from a national survey of 26 hospitals in 21 cities. All of the hospitals found infection with the AIDS virus among some patients being treated for other illnesses.

The study was conducted by the federal Centers for Disease Control and is being published in today's issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. - The New York Times
