EWERT COULD HAVE WRITTEN EDITORIAL

YOUR EDITORIAL July 8, "Explore is no threat to other projects," reads as if Bern Ewert is the author. The question is, now that the Explore Project/River Foundation is in financial trouble, have you surreptitiously hired Ole Dad Bern for another $90,000?

It's a safe bet if the Chipper and/or Dickie had made the fund warning, you would have lavished unlimited praise on them. You might have let the warning go unnoticed but awarded them Attaboy Chits.

But no, you seem to resort to your monopolistic vituperation and censure a gentleman who places the good of all Virginians, as well as his own constituency, first and foremost. If what you print is considered good journalism, then Roanoke needs some sort of "trashy rag" to provide much long-overdue competition.

Are you going to issue a public apology to the Hon. J. Granger Macfarlane when the warning of "a high-ranking congressional aide" comes true, that the Roanoke River Parkway - which would provide the only public access to Explore - is competing for federal funds with the proposed direct link to Blacksburg? Will you do the decent thing, or the journalistic thing? R.A. MEYERHOFF HARDY
