TWIRLERS TAKE CONTEST HONORS

Pizzazz, the Star City Twirlers, under the direction of Joan Duus of Roanoke, took one first- and two second-place team prizes in the Virginia championships of the National Baton Twirling Association, held recently in Richmond.

The following team members received individual awards:

Tara Anne Duus, 16, daughter of Chick and Joan Duus of Roanoke, advanced junior division. First in Miss Old Dominion, best-appearing majorette, solo twirl, super X strut, two-baton, show twirl and advanced duet (with Nikki Williams); second in basic strut and military strut.

Nikki Williams, 15, daughter of Nick and Sharon Williams of Roanoke, advanced junior division. First in military strut and basic strut, fourth in intermediate junior solo twirl.

Wendy Polniak, 9, daughter of Ronnie and Connie Polniak of Troutville, beginner juvenile division. First in super X strut and best-appearing majorette, second in two-baton, third in solo twirl, fourth in Miss Old Dominion, fifth in basic strut.

Aimee Simmons, 11, daughter of Garland and Carolynn Simmons of Moneta, novice and beginner pre-teen divisions. First in beginner Miss Old Dominion, third in novice solo twirl, fifth in beginner show twirl and novice super X strut.

Heather Belk, 11, daughter of Tom and Zee Belk of Roanoke, novice pre-teen division. First in Miss Old Dominion and second in best-appearing majorette.

Elizabeth Martin, 8, daughter of Robert and Jackie Martin of Cloverdale, beginner and advanced juvenile divisions. Third in beginner best-appearing majorette and fifth in advanced basic and military strut.

Kristy Stafford, 10, daughter of Jim and Susan Dillon of Blue Ridge, beginner juvenile division. Fifth in show twirl.

Angela Craddock, 8, daughter of Joe and Jean Craddock of Roanoke, novice juvenile division. Fourth in solo twirl and military strut.

Katie Ahern, 9, daughter of James and Patricia Ahern of Roanoke, novice juvenile division. Third in military strut.
