Two free pool parties scheduled for teens

Alcohol- and drug-free pool parties for teen-agers will be held Friday and Aug. 4 from 7 until 9:30 p.m. at Roanoke's public swimming pools.

Refreshments will be provided at the parties, which are offered free of charge for youths ages 13-18. Entertainment will be by Non Stop D.J. Association, C3 & Cool Clint and Killer Miller.

Friday's party will be at Fallon Park pool and the Aug. 4 party will be at the Washington Park pool. Rain dates are Aug. 3 and Aug. 11, respectively.

The events are sponsored by Mental Health Services of Roanoke Valley, the Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department and the Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition. For more information, call 982-1427.

Workers to raise funds for Leukemia Society

The employees of Kroger Cos. and Allstate Insurance Co. will participate Saturday in the fifth annual Corporate Swim to benefit the patient-aid program of the Leukemia Society for the Roanoke Valley.

In addition to the swimming marathon, which will be held from 9 a.m. until noon at the Hollins College pool, the employees will sell $1 tickets for chances to win one of more than 50 donated prizes. The prizes include dinners, movies and gift certificates for merchandise. Drawings will be held during the marathon.
