WALTRIP WON'T START IN DIEHARD

Darrell Waltrip has decided not to start the DieHard 500 Winston Cup stock car race on Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.

Waltrip is recovering from injuries, including a broken leg, suffered in a crash at Daytona three weeks ago; he drove one lap at Pocono last Sunday before being relieved by Jimmy Horton.

Waltrip was not at the track Thursday for first-round qualifying.

Joe Carver, a spokesman for Waltrip, said Waltrip will not start because he felt that making a driver change after the first lap would reduce his team's chances of winning the race.

Dave Marcis, who also suffered a broken leg in the crash in which Waltrip was hurt, said he will start the DieHard 500 and get relief help from Jim Sauter.

\ Winston Cup drivers were embarrassed by the 201.456 mph lap turned by Charlie Glotzbach on Wednesday in winning the pole for the Automobile Racing Club of America race Saturday.

"It makes us look like a bunch of monkeys," Dale Earnhardt said.

The ARCA cars were permitted to qualify with a 1-inch carburetor restrictor plate. Winston Cup cars are limited to plates with a 29/32nd-inch opening to keep them below 200 mph speeds.

\ LUGNUTS: Neil Bonnett, who has not raced since his accident at Darlington in April, is serving as a "technical adviser" this week for ARCA driver Jeff Purvis. . . . Funeral services for Raymond Fox Jr., an engine builder for Davey Allison's Ford team, are scheduled for 11 a.m. today in Charlotte, N.C. Fox, 47, died of a heart attack Monday. He had been involved in racing for 30 years.
