BUCS' LOSING STREAK AT 10

Three Kinston pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts and Kim Costo drove in five runs as the Indians downed the stumbling Salem Buccaneers 9-4 in Carolina League baseball action Thursday night.

Salem starter Steve Buckholz failed to get past the second inning, and Chris Estep and Austin Manahan each struck out three times as the Bucs lost their 10th straight.

Greg Sims, Bruce Schreiber and Darwin Pennye accounted for seven of Salem's nine hits, and Schreiber knocked in two runs.

Kinston jumped on Buckholz for four runs in the first inning as Costo cracked a two-run double and Jim Thome delivered a two-out, two-run single.

When Buckholz loaded the bases to begin the second inning, he was replaced by Brent Honeywell, who gave up an RBI single to Costo.

Salem scratched back to 5-4 after five innings. One run came on Mandy Romero's 11th home run to lead off the fourth inning.

Kinston tacked on three unearned runs in the sixth inning on two errors by Salem shortstop Flavio Williams.

Indians starter Todd Gonzales (9-3) struck out eight in six innings, and relievers Scott Neill and Greg Ferlenda nailed down the victory by striking out eight of nine batters.
