OPENING: "Virgil Powers" opens officially tonight at Lime Kiln Arts near Lexington.

Written by Don Baker with songs composed by Robin and Linda Williams, the play is a blend of Appalachian history and romance, full of longing, joy, dreams and reality.

Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $12.

"Munci Meg" is the fare on Saturday night, and "Virgil Powers" returns Monday and Tuesday and at intervals during the remainder of the season.

For information, call 463-3074.\ FAMILIAR FACE: "Bob" of Sesame Street (real name: Bob McGrath) will perform with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra on Saturday night at 6:30 in the second of this season's "Picnic with the Pops" concerts.

McGrath has been involved with Sesame Street for 21 years. His prior experience includes a tenor soloist's role on the "Sing Along with Mitch" television program.

Tickets are available at the Salem Civic Center box office, which can be reached at 375-3004. The concert is underwritten by the Norfolk Southern Corporation.

Saturday morning, McGrath will make an appearance for "Biscuits with Bob" from 9 to 10:30 at the studios of WBRA-TV in Roanoke. The event is free and open to the public. The event will feature a live broadcast, as well as clowns, music, balloons, free biscuits and drinks.\ HOOFBEATS: The Blue Ridge Draft Horse and Mule Show will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Farm Museum at Ferrum College in Ferrum.

Major draft horse breeds, including Percherons, Belgians, Suffolks and Clydesdales, will be worked and exhibited.

Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens. For information, call 365-4416.\ PICKERS: Trapezoid, regarded by some as the finest folk group in America, will perform Sunday night at 8 at Lime Kiln Arts near Lexington. The band's acoustic music is said to exist somewhere outside the bounds of other musical forms but is nonetheless accessible.

Wednesday night, Peter Ostroushko and bluesman John Jackson will play at 8 on Lime Kiln's lawn.

Ostroushko is best known for his contributions to "A Prairie Home Companion."\ PLAZA PLEASURE: Mill Mountain Theatre will present excerpts from its current musical, "Magic To Do," today at 12:15 p.m. at Crestar Plaza in Roanoke.

The cast will sing the songs of Stephen Schwartz, whose popular scores include "Godspell" and "Pippin."

It's free.

The play continues at Theater B in Center on Church through Aug. 5.\ MARK YOUR CALENDAR: An enjoyable interlude of folk and acoustic music is set for Aug. 4 and 5, when the Oak Grove Musical Festival takes place again at Oak Grove Theater near Verona.

Robin and Linda Williams, who were among the festival's founders, will return this year. Other performers include Hesperus, Bob Zentz, Paul Geremia, Windfall and Joyce Breeden.

The theater is outside. Rain will move everyone to Bessie Weller School in Staunton.

Tickets are $20 for the two days of music, dance and workshops. Children younger than 6 get in free, and a family weekend ticket is $50.

For information, call 885-3000.\ BLUES AND MORE BLUES: Little Charlie and the Nightcats, who record on the Alligator label, will play at the Iroquois Club in Roanoke on Saturday night. Eddie Kirkland, another bluesman, will join them.
