JUDGE CERTIFIES CHARGE OF MURDER IN ROANOKE SLAYING

A judge certified a murder charge Friday against a woman accused of shooting her boyfriend to death outside a Roanoke nightspot.

General District Judge George Harris ruled there was enough evidence to support a second-degree murder charge against Agnes Marie Basham, 44, of the 800 block of Hunt Avenue Northwest.

The case of Basham, who is charged with killing 29-year-old William Robert Poindexter, now goes to a grand jury for a possible indictment.

Poindexter died in the early morning of July 5 in what police described as a "lover's quarrel."

Testimony Friday showed that Poindexter and Basham were leaving a restaurant in the 1700 block of Melrose Avenue. Poindexter shoved Basham before she fired several shots, a witness testified.

Poindexter died of three gunshot wounds in his chest and back. Basham drove off in a car with several other people, but surrendered to police a few hours later.
