CATTLE COUNT REMAINS SAME

A midyear cattle inventory showed 108.9 million head on the nation's farms and ranches as of July 1, virtually unchanged from the levels of one and two years ago, the Agriculture Department said Friday.

The figure compared to last year's 108.6 million and the 108.5 million level of 1988.

Officials said the 1990 calf crop is expected to be 40 million head, down fractionally from last year and 1 percent below 1988.

The July 1 inventory of 108.9 million head - which includes calves and dairy cattle as well as beef stock - included these categories, compared with the last two years, respectively:

Beef cows, 34.3 million, up slightly from July 1, 1989, and 1 percent above July 1988.

Milk cows, 10.1 million, unchanged from last year and 1 percent below two years ago.
