TROOPER'S PET DOG HELPS FIND MISSING MAN

An elderly man who had wandered from his Floyd County home was found unharmed Thursday afternoon with the help of a state trooper's dog, Sheriff Russell Quesenberry said.

Ray Williams, in his early 70s, has Alzheimer's disease. He was reported missing about 10:30 a.m. Thursday by family members who had not seen him since the previous night, Quesenberry said.

Williams lives with his wife on Virginia 615 near the Little River Bridge.

More than 20 sheriff's deputies and fire and rescue workers spread out to scour the hillsides and farmland near Williams' house and to wade through portions of the Little River.

State Trooper Doug Holley brought in his bloodhound from his home in Willis, Quesenberry said.

The dog is Holley's pet and is not a state police dog. But Holley had been training the dog to trace scents in hopes that he could someday assist police in a search, Quesenberry said.

"Its amazing how he worked. It led us in the right direction," he said.

The bloodhound traced Williams' scent along the river and down a hill behind Williams' house. Shortly after noon, Williams came walking out of a field near where the bloodhound had led Holley and other rescue workers.

Williams told Quesenberry he had become disoriented and wandered off. He did not know how long he had been gone and had fallen a few times.

"He seemed in pretty good shape," Quesenberry said.
