SOVIET BASKETBALL TEAM WILL TRAIN AT VCU

A Soviet basketball team, Leningrad Spartak, will train from Aug. 3-11 at Virginia Commonwealth. The Leningrad squad will be preparing for the Soviet national championships.

VCU coach Sonny Smith and Tennessee-Chattanooga coach Mack McCarthy - both former assistant coaches at Virginia Tech - will conduct daily clinics for the Leningrad team. Spartak is the first Soviet team to train in the United States.

The visit is part of an exchange program between VCU and the Soviet Union. One of the Leningrad players is 7-foot-2 Constantin Pepeliaev, who plans to enroll at VCU this fall and play for Smith's team. - Staff report
