2 GATOR SWIMMERS WIN STATE-MEET GOLDS

Two Roanoke Valley Gators swimmers combined to win three gold medals Friday as the Virginia Long Course Junior Olympics opened competition.

Brian Marsh finished first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke in the 11-12 boys' division, and Meredith Hale won the 100 backstroke in the 15-18 girls.

Eighteen teams and 450 swimmers are competing in the meet, which lasts through Sunday. Swimmers qualified for this event by meeting time standards during the year.

Results of Roanoke Valley Gators swimmers:

10-and-under girls - Carolyn Butcher, second place in 100-meter breaststroke, second in 50 freestyle; Mandy Lippitt, sixth in 200 individual medley.

11-12 boys - Brian Marsh, firsts in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, second in 50 free; Whit Hughston, fifth in 50 freestyle.

13-14 boys - David Feldman, sixth in 100 backstroke.

13-14 girls - Brooke Adams, second in 100 backstroke, seventh in 100 IM; Sandra Ungerer, fourth in 200 breaststroke.

15-18 boys - Dan Summerlin, second in 400 IM.

15-18 girls - Ashley Roe, third in 200 breaststroke, eighth in 200 freestyle; Meredith Hale, first in 100 backstroke; Shannon Goff, third in 100 backstroke. - Staff report
