FISHER JOINING NEWSPAPER'S EDITORIAL STAFF

Margie Fisher, a veteran reporter at the Roanoke Times & World-News, will join the newspaper's editorial staff effective Monday.

Fisher, 53, has worked in the newspaper's Richmond bureau since 1975, covering state government and state politics.

"She knows state politics as well as anyone in Virginia, but she also is thoughtful about a lot of other things. And she doesn't mince words," said Alan Sorensen, editorial page editor.

A Roanoke native, Fisher joined the news department staff in 1959 and has covered a wide variety of subjects.

Before joining the Richmond bureau, she served 10 years as the medical writer for the Roanoke World-News. In 1974, she became the first woman at the Roanoke newspapers to be given senior writer status.

Fisher replaces Sue Lindsey, who moves to the newsroom copy desk as Virginia editor for the state, New River Valley, Bedford-Franklin and metro editions of the morning newspaper.

A native of Norristown, Pa., Lindsey joined the Roanoke Times & World-News in 1980 as a copy editor and joined the editorial staff in 1986.

"I've heard from many readers who appreciated Sue Lindsey's contributions on the editorial page and in her columns. Sue helped broaden our outlook," said Sorensen. "She left a big gap in this operation when she decided to move to news."
